Storyline:
A family ( Emily the stonekeeper, stonekeepers are people that use a magical stones, Navin the commander of the revolution, and the regular care for the kids mum) that has gone into another world that is way different than theirs.  They are helping the Cielis guard soldiers fight against the elves, but Max the stone keeper is standing in the soldiers and the family's way.  Emily and her friends must stop the invasion of the elves before it starts, or else they will destroy the nation called Windsor.
What I liked best:
What I liked best is all the creativity in this book, like how the technology and mobiles are different to ours, it makes the story interesting and makes me want to read more.
What I didn’t like best:
What I didn’t like was nothing because it is all well done and it’s a very good book.
Favourite character and why:
My favourite character is Navin because he is good at things like flying jets, airplanes and other air mobiles, and he is commander of the revolution.
Would I recommend this book:
Yes I would because It is a great book and very well done by the author and Illustrator.  I think that whoever reads my book will think what I do about this book.

Olympic Artwork

This here is my Olympic artwork, I had to take a picture of me and cut off the picture of my head and put it on an Olympic athlete's body.  Then we made a tessellation for the background of the picture (a repeating pattern of shapes or a shape that doesn't overlap and has no gaps).  

After that we made similes (comparing someone or something to a thing or a person) and metaphors (a direct comparison) that compare to what the athletes are doing what they look like they are doing.  

For the border we used words like the three Olympics values (Excellence, Friendship, and Respect) and shaded the border in a bright colour.  Next we had to outline the words to make the words pop more.  Then we gave it to Miss Hills (my teacher) and she laminated it for us.  On the last week of Term 3 which is now, we had to glue it in our quality work book.  This is a picture before I glued it in the quality workbook.

Hong Kong STEM Challenge



Names:

Our Materials:
6 x long sticks
1 x  wooden square
2 x pipe cleaners
2 x straws
11 x plastic cubes
1 x bunch of popsicle sticks
4 x wooden small flat pieces



Challenge #1 - Build a structure with a cube as the base:

In challenge 1 it was hard because you had to focus on balancing the structure so it does not fall and bust down and that happened to us a lot, so we had to make it again.  It was going well at the start but at the end, not so much.

Challenge #2 - Build the tallest structure that you can and your base can be any size:

Challenge 2 was very interesting because it’s hard to build things on a table when everyone is doing something at the same time.  It was going well until it came to the end.



Challenge #3 -  Build a structure with something that balances off the side of it:

In challenge 3 you had to make one of your items stick out of the side.  It was hard because you had to make it balance and the pipe cleaners were supposed to be the things that stick out, but they touched the table and you cannot let that happen.

Moment In Time Week 7

Today our teacher asked us to write a ‘Moment In Time’ piece using a picture of a boy in the water.  We planned as a class to make sure we had the 5 W’s and the 6 Senses.  


Before we began our writing in small groups we discussed the importance of using descriptive writing, using similes and metaphors where appropriate, using dialogue and have done our best to make sure our punctuation is correct.  Some of us have even used ‘Show Don’t Tell’ in our writing to provide our reader with more of an experience.


Our teacher gave us 10 minutes for each paragraph and then 10 minutes for editing at the end.  We had so much fun working together!

Boy Overboard!

“AGHHHH!” said Jack as his uncle suddenly drove straight into a wave and it went crashing down on them.  The pressure was so powerful that it knocked Jack straight off the boat and into the freezing cold water.  He was starting to drown, but luckily he knew how to swim.  He got a breath of air just in time, he could of died.   


Jack saw some sharks coming towards him like lightning.  He swam to the boat as fast as he could, his uncle never noticed that he got tipped off the boat.  “Uncle, help me please!” Jack screamed, but his uncle could not hear his screams over the crashing waves.  He went to the side of the boat and banged it as hard as he could, but his uncle could still not hear him.  Jack thought he was really going to die, and now the sharks were closer than he ever wanted.   


The sharks circled around him, which Jack did not like it, he was terrified.  One of the sharks tried to strike but Jack had dodged it.  The other sharks attacked but they were not fast enough to eat him.  Jack was to tired to dodge the attacks now, they were really going to eat him now.  But at the last second there was a school of tuna that distracted the blood thirsty sharks.  The sharks went to the school of fish then Jack said  “now I have more time to get my uncle’s attention?”, for a school of tuna is way better than a skinny little boy.

I think I did well on typing the moment in time and sharing my ideas to my group.

Matariki Reflections

Matariki is a time for reflection.  Yesterday with Whaea Toni we took the time to reflect on our year and set a new goal.  Here is the goal I set:

We made a Matariki star.  We used our algebraic thinking.  We had a pattern to follow:

1, 2 and down

1 and up

We repeated this pattern until we got the star.

Matariki Celebration

Every year the māori people celebrate Matariki.  Matariki is the celebration of the seven stars or the seven sisters and is their new year.  Every class has
made something for our celebration of Matariki, some have even budded up.


My class made kites for the celebration,Our teacher Miss Hills had got some raupō (a type of flax) in the weekend for us.  We all got toetoe (a stiff plant) for our groups from the hill across the road, though my buddy Malcolm could not come for he was sick.  Before we could do any of that we had to do we said a karakia.  We have to do this so we promise that we will respect the plants.  It is also what the māori did when they took the harakeke and other plants from the forest and other places.  We always do this because it is tikanga, why we do what we do.  

After we came back to class we had to make our kites.  I had to measure the toetoe so my teacher can cut it into three equal parts for the sides of my manu tukutuku.  When I measured my toetoe it was a hundred and ten centimetres.  Before Miss Hills had cut it I had to make a strategy for how I got the measurement so I can make a video of my strategy.  My strategy was pretty hard to make because I had to go into decimals.  I had to use some help from Havana, a girl who also did not have a buddy on Tuesday.  It was pretty hard for me and her to make a strategy, so we did it with some help.  We tried to do it before lunch time but we didn’t have time.  So I did it in lunch time, the only problem was that we had at least ten interruptions.  Miss Hill’s had got really frustrated, but we got through it.  After Miss Hill’s had cut the toetoe I was with Patrick, he had helped me with the weaving stage.  We used wool instead of harakeke.  I broke the harakeke into strips for my manu (kite) and cut one meter of wool for each colour.  I had to do this by my own because Patrick wanted to do his manu.  I had put harakeke on the toetoe and then weaved the wool on the harakeke and the toetoe. I had used black and white in the middle, and on the sides was red and black. My design was waves and white backround on the edge, with a circle in the middle. I had hot glue gunned the manu then I took a picture of me and my manu. Then it wrecked, I tried to fix it then I put it in the hall for our celebration. Thank you for coming to Rangikura School to share your opera show.

My most favourite part was when the salesman that sold potions ripped him off when the elixir was just L&P.  I really liked it when everyone of the actors sung because I have never heard opera in person.   The singers were really funny and entertaining and it was nice to watch them.

I would really like it if you and your actors could come back some day so we can watch your amazing acting and singing.

My Duffy Books

These are my Duffy books that I got from school.  We get these because our school is with Duffy and I like it because I Like to read.  Every year we get free books from the Duffy company, we go to the hall and mostly someone important comes like Cristan Hall.  

She was the one that came today in the hall when we had the Duffy assembly.  When It was finished we came back to our class and we read for a bit.  Then Miss Hills asked if we wanted to get our Duffy books now and we all said yes.  We got them and then we went back to finishing our work off.

How To Weave A Box

What you need:
  • Piece of paper
  • Scissors
  • pen/pencil
  • Cello tape
  • Ruler                     
                                      
1.  Cut out strips of paper that are 1 cm wide and 30 cm long, measure it with your ruler.

2.  Put 5 strips of paper close to each other about 2 cm apart.

3.  Use the other five strips and put it under and over the other strips.

4.  Push the strips close together until it makes a square in the inside.

5.  Cello tape the base (the middle of it) so it can stay in it’s position.

6.  Fold the outside of the strips over the base.

7.  Cut out 4 more strips of paper that are 24 cm long and 1 cm wide.

8.  Fold one strip into four quarters.


9.  Use that strip to weave it in the four sides and keep it tight enough to keep it’s position.


10.  Cello tape the four corners so the strip stays like it is.


11.  Repeat step 10 and 9 with the other three strips.

12.  Cello tape any strips that are sticking up.

Whanaungatanga Term 1





This is my artwork that I did in Term 1 and also my class, I will tell you what they are.  The big paper is my identity, it shows where I’m from and who I am.  The yellow picture is me, my class and I took a photo and cut it in half and the other half is the face that I sketched.

The picture of the four korus are my whanaungatanga, if you don't know what it means look on the part called Whanaungatanga on my blog.  The paper on top of the whanaungatanga is my definition of manaakitanga and whanaungatanga.  You may not know what manaakitanga means, it is when you have to respect others and have manners, it is the step to whanaungatanga.

The last one I'm going to talk about is my mihi.  Our version that my class used tells you who your principle is, school, name, room number, teacher, where I'm from, name and family name.
